In Exodus 30, God commands that all of the sons of Israel, age 20 and up are to pay the half shekel Temple tax. This important command was given to support the Temple and its service and became even more important in the first century world of Yeshua due to the fact that most Jews lived in Diaspora and were unable to make it to Jerusalem frequently. Thus, it became their way to remain connected to the Temple and its service. One of the most significant parts of this command is that the half shekel applies to all Israel regardless of their wealth or social status; all are considered equal in God's eyes.
